    President's Message

Here is our second attempt at an e-mail newsletter, and I hope you can all read it. Let me know what you think. The next one will go to NCDC members only. Enclosed is a renewal form. If your last name is not on the list of members and you would like to join or rejoin, please do so soon by sending returning the enclosed renewal form.

We hope many of you can come to the annual Match and Fun Day on October 18 in Pleasanton, on the day before the Del Valle show. Peggy Kopf will be our judge. There will be an informal match with a new class (added spontaneously last year) of Best of Other Breed. Then the famous costume class and fun games. Not to mention a delicious potluck. The information was emailed; if you missed it, it is at the end of this message. The deerhound entry for the show on Sunday is not a supported entry this year. The information was submitted, but evidently the superindendent missed it. We will resume the supported entry next year.

The news from Oregon is that Joan and Joe Giles have moved into their new home and are now caring for eight new puppies out of Starr by Blayne. What a way to begin in a new place.

We were able to visit Terri Campbell in Washington, and had a lovely time seeing her new home and chatting.

    Tidbits

    At the Shows

Sally Pooleıs Daisy (Ch Windshift Wintersweets) is taking the West by storm; on a recent trip through Northern California and Oregon, she captured a Group 1, 2, and 3.

    New Conformation Champions

Congratulations to Darrowbyıs Duncan of Oelmuhle, who finished his conformation championship this spring in Woodland, and his owners, Chris Eaton, Bonnie Graham, and Carol Gabriel.

A big round of applause to Jihadıs Siofra, Amy and Steveıs girl bred by Barbara Mullis, who finished at the Lompoc Valley Kennel Club show on Saturday, July 26.

    On the Field

Ellen Pilling reports that Sindar Summersweets O Windshift earned a leg of her JC at Lompoc with a terrific run. It was the first time she had seen a plastic lure, and when she finally caught it, she shredded it. She gets to practice regularly on jackrabbits at home in Nevada.

Also earning his first JC leg at Lompoc was Summerıs brother, Sindar Speedwell O Windshift (Nick). Paul and Lee Bergmanıs Nick was seen flying through the Labor Day ASFA Trials with three great runs.

    Movin' On/In the Nursery

Joe and Joan Giles made the announcement at the Lompoc specialty that they have bought a lovely home in Grants Pass, Oregon, on the banks of the Applegate river. They moved in the third weekend of September, and one week later their girl Ch Jihad Starr at Glencrag produced eight healthy puppies (four of each gender) by Ch Glencrag Blayne SC. Amy Poland went up to help with the whelping, and Ellen Pilling will visit soon to help.

A visit to Terri Campbell and her Forteviot gang found them happy and healthy, refurbishing a lovely farm style house on forested acreage in Belfair, Washington. The deerhounds have twisting racetracks through the trees, and Terri has a lovely view over Hood Canal to the Olympic Mountains. We enjoyed a walk through the nearby wetlands preserve and talked about California deerhounds.

    Sad Goodbyes

Peggy Kopf said goodbye to her last deerhound, Ch Ladybank's Hildy SC, in August. Hildy succumbed to old age at 10 years old. Hildy was the last of many years of Ladybank deerhounds, now in many pedigrees all over the country. Peggy will always be a part of the deerhound world, and continues the Ladybank kennel name with her Skye terriers.

Christie Keith lost her young dog, Bran, to sudden acute kidney failure. Despite ten days of hospitalization and everything UC Davis could do, he didn't make it. While some necropsy results are still pending, so far, a month later, the cause of his kidney failure is still unknown.

    Fun Stuff

October 4 is the date of the 2003 Loch Lomond Highland Games, held in Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz mountains. They have a Celtic Critters corner (in the shade under oak trees) which we hope will have some deerhounds. This event is a like a Rennaissance Fair and Games combined, with wonderful music and wares.

    Bloat Study

The "big three" genetically influenced health risks of deerhounds and other large sighthounds are dilated cardiomyopathy, osteosarcoma, and bloat/tortion (gastric dilatation-volvulus). In April 2003, the AKC Gazette published an article by Jerold S. Bell, DVM, about the risk factors for canine bloat and torsion. The facts reported were from an ongoing study done by Dr Larry Glickman of Purdue University. Following is a short summary of some of the results:

Dogs with the greatest risk of developing bloat are large and giant breeds with chests that are deep and narrow. This conformation allows more movement of the stomach, which increases the chances of torsion. Lean dogs have more room in the abdomen, and therefore are at higher risk than overweight dogs.

Older dogs have a higher risk; in large breeds the risk goes up 20% each year after age 5; in giant breeds it goes up 20% each year after age 3.

First degree relatives of dogs that have had bloat are at higher risk.

Dogs that eat quickly have a higher risk, presumably because they swallow more air as they eat.

Dogs that are fed from raised bowls are 110 percent more likely to develop bloat. It has been thought in the past that this method of feeding would help prevent bloat, but now it is recognized that it creates more risk.

Temperment is important. Fearful, nervous, or aggressive dogs had a much higher incidence of bloat than dogs which were considered to be happy. Stressed dogs, such as those who have been kenneled or shipped, are at a higher risk. Males are slightly more prone to develop bloat than females.

Some feeding practices were associated with higher risks, including feeding only dry foods and feeding a single large daily meal. Much higher risk is associated with kibble which has fat as one of the first four ingredients, and kibble which contains citric acid. Dry foods containing a rendered meat and bone meal decreased risk, as did mixing table food or canned food into dry food. Countries which use less dry food have a lower incidence of bloat. The higher risk associated with feeding one large meal and higher incidence of bloat in older dogs are related, as the weight of large meals and aging both cause stretching of the ligaments which hold the stomach in place.

Several theories about the causes of bloat were eliminated by this study. Heavy exercise before or after feeding is not related, nor is water intake. Neither vaccinations nor specific brands of food were implicated.

"From the research performed to date, we can list several factors that, added together, can characterize the typical dog that develops bloat: a deep and narrow chest; leanness; a relative that has had a bloat episode; eating quickly; a dry-food diet; a single, large daily meal; stress; and a fearful, nervious, or aggressive temperment."

Of dogs who do bloat, 30 percent will die or have to be euthanized due to shock, irregular heartbeat and/or rupture/death of the stomach wall. Immediate treatment is relief of pressure, either by stomach tube or hypodermic needle, followed by surgery if the stomach has torsed. At this time, or later in a dog which does not require surgery, is a gastropexy, which is surgical "tacking" of the stomach in place. Seventy six percent of dogs who did not have a gastropexy bloated again, and half of those bloated within three months. Only 6 percent of those who had the gastropexy bloated again. Researchers are developing a new laparoscopic gastropexy technique, which will require only a small incision on the side of the abdomen.

Bloat is not inherited directly, but a predisposition to develop bloat does run in families. Paying attention to keeping a breadth of pedigree and avoiding the breeding of dogs which display predisposing factors, especially deep narrow chests, should help decrease the prevelance of bloat/torsion.

Future of the Golden State Deerhound Club

Sixteen years ago, a group of Deerhound fanciers in California formed a club so they could hold a Western Regional Specialty. This was the Golden State Deerhound Club, and every year since then, Joe and Joan Giles have chaired the Western Specialty in Lompoc. The Giles have retired and bought a riverside home in Grants Pass, Oregon, and will retire from their show chair positions as well. After this yearıs Specialty, GSDC held its annual meeting to determine its future. The Giles are willing to chair one more Lompoc specialty, as the contract with the judge is already signed. It was decided that, unless someone from California wants to take over the Lompoc venue, 2004 will be the last specialty in Lompoc, and subsequent specialties will move to other western locations. The club will change its name to something more regional, such as Western States Deerhound Club, and the treasury will remain with that club as seed money for the next venues. The 2003 Specialty fell well below the minimum number of dogs showing that the SDCA requires for a Specialty, so some effort will be required to be allowed to hold the last Lompoc event next year.

The slate of officers elected for the next year are: Joan Giles, President; Kris Smith, Vice President; Joan Garth, Secretary; Amy Poland, Treasurer.

    AKC/ASFA Coursing Wars

Coursing aficianados are up in arms about a new enforcement of an AKC rule which could change the face of lure coursing. Probably intended for other reasons not having anything to do with lure coursing, a rule was inacted by AKC which says that no AKC club will be allowed to sponsor events ruled by other organizations. Coursing clubs typically belong to both AKC and ASFA so they can host lure courses of both organizations. Since AKC lure coursing is not offered as much and is not as well attended as ASFA events, the AKC may shoot itself in the foot by imposing these restrictions. Clubs will just drop their AKC affiliations and go with ASFA, which was the original lure coursing organization. It became popular, so AKC decided to offer itıs own version and titles. Many other disciplines are similarly effected and upset by this rule and the issue is currently being addressed, so letıs hope we come out with nothing damaged in the lure coursing world.
