President's Message
It has been a grim winter for us. Our dear beloved Rhia (Sindar Rhiannon SC) went into labor on January 15, but the first puppy was stuck sideways so she went in for a C-section/spay. Five puppies were delivered, she woke up enough to sniff them, and let them suckle, and five hours later she was dead of DIC. Over the next three days, four of the puppies died, so we took the survivor to Auburn, where Sally Poole’s new mom Daisy adopted her and took care of her. When she was two weeks old, we brought her home, as Daisy’s pups, being 12 days older, were getting too active for her. Then the unthinkable happened, and Daisy died. Sally let us borrow two of her pups as company for our orphan. We have named her Jeffcairn Leannan, aka Annie. We are bringing the Jeffcairn kennel name back, which belonged to Bayard’s mother, Mickie Smith, in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Little Annie is thriving, and reminds us of her mother when she chases and attacks a sock on a string. It is bittersweet, as each reminder of Rhia is glorious and devastating.
Thanks to Judge Peggy Kopf and the other helpers, we had a great Fun Day in October. It is meant to be a fundraiser, but the income has been falling behind the expenses as the venue and insurance increase. Please join or rejoin today so we can continue.
Once again, the NCDC website has been just a little too much work for our volunteer to take on. In this day and age of cyber communication, this is something we really need. We have free hosting; is there a member who would be willing to put together a website that I can manage? Thanks for any help.
Our Annual Meeting will be on April 17 right after Deerhound judging at the Chief Solano KC show in Vallejo at the Solano County Fairgrounds. Please come with your ideas of how NCDC can meet your needs.

MINUTES FROM THE NCDC FALL MEETING
Saturday October 19, 2003
Alameda County Fairgrounds
Present: Denny and Sally Allen, Cari Bowe, Amy Poland, Sally Poole, Kris Smith, Chris Wright, Jean Weiss, Shela Greenlaw, Christie Keith, Harriet King, Peggy Kopf.
The meeting was called to order at 12:45.
1. The minutes of the Annual Meeting of April 19, 2003 were approved as published.
2. Kris distributed the Treasurer’s report, which showed a loss of $250 for the year to date. The insurance carrier was changed to Sportsman Insurance, saving the increase that would have been due if we had stayed with State Farm. The fee for the Fun Day venue has gone up. Considerable savings will be realized with an email newsletter. The Treasurer’s Report was approved.
3. Old business
- E-mail newsletter: Sally pointed out that there isn’t much reason to join NCDC if the newsletters are email and online. Christie said that the members will get the newsletter directly, and others will get a notice that it is available.
- Website: Christie can provide free hosting through doghobbyist.com. It will be ready soon, it will be a conventional website, will show up on searches, fun day photos will be on it.
4. New business
- Update: Lompoc weekend - Siofra and Mickie finished, Daisy OS, Poppy WB at Specialty; Daisy BOB the other days, Welby OS. Coursing: Glory got her first ASFA BIF.
- Golden State Deerhound Club: Formed sixteen years ago to put on Western Specialty. Joe and Joan Giles have organized most of them. There will be one more Western Specialty at Lompoc and then it will probably move to another venue. The name will change to something like Western States Deerhound Club, new club will keep treasury from GSDC. Officers for 2004 are: President, Joan Giles; Vice-President, Kris Smith; Secretary, Joan Garth; and Treasurer, Amy Poland.
- Location of next meeting: Discussion about a place that more people might come for a relaxing day with dogs rather than a show where mostly show people come. Christie offered her place in Cazadero, but we thought it was too hard to get to. She invited people to come informally for a gathering. The next meeting will be in April at the Vallejo show.
- Peggy and Sally said friends gathered on Labor Day at Sally’s house to have a memorial for past deerhounds that have died. Their ashes were scattered on a hill, and a bagpiper led the procession.
- Harriet and Renee will host the Deerhound Booth at the Eukanuba Classic in Long Beach. Ideas are welcome.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:15
Respectfully submitted by Kris Smith, NCDC Secretary
Tidbits
At the Shows
It was a sibling act at Northern California shows through January. The Windshift kids Woodruff (Poole), Wildflower (Bowe/Poole), and Wood Rose (Wright/Poole) traded points, while Champions sister Wintersweets and brother Wellbeloved took the breed and went on to Group placements. On the way to the Eukanuba Classic in San Diego, Jaraluv Keep the Faith stopped by the San Mateo shows, taking the breed over her brother Kempthorne, and on to a Group 1 the first day, a Group 3 the second day, then let Kempthorne take the breed the third day.
In January Chris Wright took Glory (Wood Rose) to the Indio shows, finishing with a splash on the second day. The Darrowby/Gabriel siblings, Heidi and Duncan, were the only participants at the Golden Gate KC show, a tough one as it is a long benched weekend. In February at the Santa Clara show, Amy Poland’s Siofra made the cut in the Group ring.
New Conformation Champions
Congratulations to Champion Windshift Wood Rose, aka Glory, owned by Chris Wright and Sally Poole, bred by Sally Poole. Her sire is Ch Pyefleet Nonesuch, and her dam is DC Windshift Bracken, JC. She finished at the Indio shows in Southern California. Chris was on his way home from a Christmas visit to his parents in Arizona, and was picking up his new Wolfhound girl at the show. He decided he might as well enter Glory, and the rest is history.
On the Field
AKC lure coursing at a new field in Oakland in November brought out Windshift Wildflower Poole), Lyonhil Darcy of McHan (Lovelady/Bullard), Sindar Speedwell O Windshift (Bergman), and Windshift Wood Rose (Wright/Poole), who finished in that order.
In ASFA Lure Coursing, Ellen Pilling traveled to Hollister in November where Sindar Summersweets O Windshift certified for ASFA lure coursing. In Oakley on February 7 and 8, hosted by the Northern California Wolfhound Club, Sindar Speedwell O Windshift, aka Nick, took the honors over Chris Wright’s Glory both days.
Glory was the only deerhound to run in a NOFCA open field event this season, making it to the last hunt in January. Amy Poland hoped to get Siofra (Ch Jihad Siofra JC) out there, but she wrenched a knee chasing jacks on her own, and had to sit out the official events.
Sad Goodbyes/In the Nursery
Sadly, these two headings are one this time, as we have experienced great losses of young deerhounds in Northern California. Sally Poole’s Daisy (Ch Windshift Wintersweets JC) delivered 7 pups, 5 boys and 2 girls, on January 4, sired by Ch Lehigh Yuill. Just after they were weaned, Daisy went in for a spay, and died following surgery. She was a superb show dog and a sweetheart, and will be missed by the many people who came to know her during her days on the road. This was an especially hard blow for Sally, as she had been in the midst of the stress of enduring a sudden and nearly fatal illness in Welby (Ch Windshift Wellbeloved JC), Daisy’s brother. After gall bladder removal and many days in ICU, Welby is at home and slowly improving, although his prognosis is not yet rosy.
Bayard and Kris Smith’s beloved Rhia (Sindar Rhiannon SC) died from DIC after a C-section/spay on January 16. Five puppies by Ch Jihad Stag of the Forest Edge JC were delivered, but over the next two days, four of the puppies died. The survivor, Annie, is doing well with her playmate from Daisy’s litter.
In the fall, Cari Bowe lost her Geordie, who was the BOB AKC lure courser at the National Specialty in Lompoc in 2002. Barbara Ballinger’s sweet girl Fiona died after a freak accident, when the youngster ran into a fence while playing.
New Kids on the Block
Margory Cohen has been keeping busy with two Fernhill pups from Canada, Sirius and Stella, from Reinagle and Holly. Their brother Szollar Duna has come to live with Suzan and Adam Szollar in Menlo Park.
Fun Stuff
UC Davis’ Picnic Day is April 17. Breed rescue groups bring examples of their breeds for display for the Breed Rescue Showcase. If you are interested, please call Kris 650-851-3155.
The Sacramento Valley Scottish Games and Gathering will be at the Yolo County Fairgrounds on April 24 and 25. They encourage Scottish animals and livestock, and have a parade. Call Kris if you are interested.
NCDC Fun Day
The NCDC annual Fun Day Match and Games was October 19, the day before the Del Valle show in Pleasanton. Peggy Kopf was our judge, and Harriet King and Renee Davis joined us from San Diego. Cari Bowe’s Poppy was Best in Match, while Renee’s puppy Kent was Best Opposite in Match. The winner of the newest class, Best of Other Breed, went to Sally Poole’s Skye, Guthrie. The Costume award went to three Blind Mice; Rhia and Randa Smith and Siofra Poland, chased by the Farmer’s Wife with a plastic cleaver. Siofra and Amy won the dress up race, closely followed by Poppy and Cari. Kent was quite entertaining as Renee tried to dress him while he was chewing on her arm, face, clothes, his clothes, his leash, etc. Rhia Smith won the Best Trick, bowing for a cookie, shaking hands, then “dying” when “shot” by a finger.
Two Moms Lost Post-Spay
Two of Northern California’s Deerhound bitches were lost this winter to complications following spaying, which has raised the question of why this seems to happen more often with Deerhounds (sighthounds?) than other breeds, and making people think twice before spaying bitches who have whelped.
Sally Poole’s Daisy (Ch Windshift Wintersweets JC) delivered 7 pups on January 4. Just after they were weaned, Daisy went in for a spay, and died half a day after her surgery.
Bayard and Kris Smith’s Rhia (Sindar Rhiannon SC) went into labor on January 15, but the first puppy was stuck sideways so she went in for a C-section/spay. Five puppies were delivered, she woke up enough to sniff them, and let them suckle, and five hours later she was dead of DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation). There was no reason for the DIC incident, just the surgery. Only one of Rhia’s pups survived.
Website Wizard Needed!
Over the past few years NCDC has attempted to maintain a website with varying results. We started out with a grand one, but your technically humble president couldn't maintain it, so it got obsolete and is now defunct. Another volunteer started to design one, but it proved to be too much for her expertise. We just need a design for a VERY simple site that can hold basic deerhound and club information, plus pictures that can be changed regularly. This must be a piece of cake for some of you cyber friendly people out there, so please help us! Thanks.
