FUN DAY ENTRY AND INFORMATION
Deerhound Fun Day October 16!
Northern California Deerhound Club
Save the date for our annual Fun Match, Games, Costume Contest, and Potluck Picnic, to be held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton on October 16 in conjunction with the Del Valle Specialties. This is a fund raiser and a time to get together with Deerhound friends, for people to practice showing and for non-show people to bring their dogs out to have some fun. Our judge is Ellen Pilling, an honorary Californian now residing in Nevada, long time Deerhound owner and personality. See the entry for full details. We have not been given an exact location yet, but directions will be sent out before the event.
The following day, Sunday October 17, NCDC is supporting the Deerhound entry, so those of you who are showing, please plan to enter your dogs.
An entry form and complete schedule are below.
President's Message
As the Fun Day approaches, I hope you are all thinking about how to dress up your deerhound for the Costume Contest. After wearing out my 30 year old sewing machine last year making a wedding dress, I just got a fancy new computerized one, and I hope I can figure it out in time to make costumes. I do hope many of you can come, because it’s such fun to see people and their dogs from year to year, especially people who aren’t showing. There will be some new gray deer folks, as there have been a few litters this year.
We are so excited to be just a few steps away from a new website. Jeanne Case has created it, and Christie Keith is putting it up. Many of you will recognize pictures which you have sent me over the last few years which I have been saving for this debut. Start putting together some more pictures, as we will be able to change them regularly. We will add a section in the gallery for competition pictures, so prepare those win and action photos, too. I will send out an e-mail announcement when it is ready to view.
There hasn’t been much action at the shows this summer, but the field has been busy. There were even four deerhounds at the tough Iron Hound competition over Labor Day. Way to go!
Hoping to see you in October.

Minutes from the NCDC Spring 2004 Meeting
Saturday, April 17,2004
Solano County Fairgrounds
Present: Denny and Sally Allen, Cecelia Arnold, Allyn Babitch, Paul and Lee Bergman, Cari Bowe, Diane Bullard, Carol Gabriel, Nancy Lovelady, Christie McDonald, Amy Poland, Sally Poole, Kris and Bayard Smith, Chris Wright, Billie Zinser.
The meeting was called to order at 12:20 pm.
1. The minutes of the Fall Meeting of Oct. 19 were approved as published (moved by Sally, 2nd Allyn).
2. Treasurer's report was distributed with agenda; membership is down, but showed profit for several reasons: fun day, bank account charges reduced, e-mail newsletter. Balance as of 4/15/04 : $1210.40.
Allyn made a motion to accept the treasurer's report, 2nd by Denny Allen.
3. Election of 2004 club Officers: no new nominations. Cecelia moved to accept proposed slate, Lee Bergman seconded the motion, members passed the motion. Officers are:
President: Kris Smith
Vice-President: Amy Poland
Secretary: Cari Bowe
Treasurer: Billie Zinser
Member At Large: Christie Keith
Past President: Sally Poole.
4. Old Business
Website: Kris Smith said that Jeanne Case has volunteered to put the website together. Members are encouraged to save photos to post on the site. It was recommended that the photos be informal, unidentified pictures to avoid using the site as a political or advertising forum.. Discussion followed: perhaps having categories for the photos would be a good idea; the consensus seemed to favor a format that would appeal to non-show members as well as show oriented members.
5. New Business
- 2004 Western Regional Specialty in July will be the last one held in Lompoc. Starting in 2005 it will be held in the Portland area.
- Fun Days practice at Del Valle on Oct. 16, will also be a supported entry Oct. 17.
- Lifetime/Extended membership proposal:
Allyn suggested we offer extended membership option rather than only annual dues, to help those of us whose memberships expire before we know it. Sally pointed out that the club is dependent on a steady income... what impact might that have? Lee suggested dues reminders. Billie Zinser said it would be hard to keep track of membership status, perhaps a bookkeeping nightmare. The matter was dropped.
- Coursing: AKC in Lodi on 4/24
- Off leash outing favorites: Point Isabelle (Berkley area) Fort Funston- I. Wolfhound group (Deerhounds welcome) 2nd Saturday of the month at 10 am.
- Scottish Games : fun for socialized Deerhounds and owners who like crowds and bagpipes... Woodland 4/24 and 4/25, Dixon in September
The meeting was adjourned at 12:47 pm
Respectfully submitted by Cari Bowe, NCDC Secretary
Tidbits
At the Shows
A number of NorCal deerhounds participated in the SDCA Western Specialty on July 23. Congratulations to the winners: Ch Darrowby's Duncan of Oelmuhle (Eaton/Graham) was BOB, Windshift Wildflower JC (Bowe/Poole) was Winner Bitch, and Lyonhil's Darcy of McHan (Lovelady/Bullard) was Reserve WB. The Smith's Jeffcairn Leannan won her puppy class, and Ellen Pilling's Ch Fernhill's Glayva JC was Veteran Bitch. At the weekend Lompoc shows, Ch Juraluv Kempthorne was BOB both days, while Darcy took the points as WB on Sunday, and Sindar Speedwell was RWD on Sunday.
Congratulations to new conformation Champions Poppy (Windshift Wildflower JC) who finished at the Western Specialty in Lompoc, and to Terri Campbell's Tor (Forteviot Silver Meteor). Tor finished on the Labor Day weekend at the Redwood Empire show. Terri reports on the DH-L, "It was good meeting Jerry and Judy Siegler from the Central Valley. They have two puppies from Joe and Joan Giles. Their puppy Clementine was first in the puppy hound group (on Saturday).”
On the Field
There’s been a lot of action on the field, with both Glory (Ch Windshift Wood Rose JC - Wright/Poole) and Nick (Sindar Speedwell of Windshift JC - Bergman) achieving their Field Championships. Glory finished in Livermore on July 10 and 11, where Cari Bowe’s Windshift Eamon and Warren (Forteviot Flying Dutchman JC) and Billie Zinser’s Andrew (Windshif Blue Boy Andrew) all made their debut. Eamon and Andrew are the sons of Poppy, this year’s AKC BOB at the National Specialty. Glory was the winner one day, and Eamon the next. Nick finished in Wheatland on August 14/15, where he swapped wins with Eamon.
It was an incredible eight deerhounds at the June 12 ASFA meet in Hollister. Three were there to compete, three to certify, one to practice, and one to cheer from the sidelines. Chris Wright's Glory won, followed by Paul and Lee Bergman's Nick and Torquil (Bergman’s Juraluv McNeil). Cari Bowe’s Warren and Eamon, and Billie Zinser’s Andrew certified. Kris and Bayard Smith's Annie (Jeffcairn Leannan), not quite 5 months old, practiced a short out and back with great enthusiasm. Auntie Randa watched with appreciation. The next day, Glory and Nick returned to swap places, with Nick going BOB over Glory.
Billie Zinser reports on the Iron Hound Competition: “Cari Bowe, with Poppy, Warren, Eamon, and I, with Andrew, attended the Iron Hound races over the Labor Day weekend in Livermore... Saturday was straight racing, Sunday was oval and Monday was Lure Coursing. All dogs that competed all 3 events were honored as Iron Hounds, but Carie's Warren and Andrew tied for lst place as The Iron Hound Scottish Deerhound, and because Warren had consistently placed 2nd all 3 days, and scored higher in the Monday event, the rules awarded the ribbon to him. (Andrew was 1st,1st and 4th). He doesn't care, and came home tired and happy. (It was hot in Livermore.) The Whippet people said several times during announcements how glad they were to have Deerhound people and Deerhounds... (there were) lots and lots of whippets. Standing close to the lure, I was surprised at how a pack of 4 small dogs can sound and feel like race horses thundering by. My chest reverberated with the sound of feet. Incredible dogs.”
Movin' On/In the Nursery
Welcome to Amy and Steve Poland's new deerhound baby boy. He is the result of a transcervical insemination with frozen semen from Ch Ardkinglas Taurus on their Ch Jihad Siofra JC. He was born by C section on July 27. They will call him Silvan. Amy reports that he is very brave with the adults and is exploring the yard.
After a long and happy stay with Eva LaMar and Andrew Fridlund, Christie Keith's Ch Sindar Rebel of Caber Feidh has come home to live with her: "His sister Raven was overjoyed to see him and he's doing great, although he did have to have emergency surgery two days after he arrived due to cystine stones. Some folks have all the luck."
Ch Windshift Wellbeloved JC has completely recovered from his near death experience with an inflamed liver, and has gone East to live with Harriet Fowler, already making an impact in the show rings there.
Sad Goodbyes
Condolences to Christie Keith, who finally said good bye to her Skye of Caber Feidh, just after his 11th birthday. Skye suffered from cystinuria, and had many successful years following surgery, but finally succumbed to recurrent bacterial infections of the bladder and prostate. His story will help guide others whose deerhounds suffer from cystinuria.
Sally Poole lost her beloved best friend Marc Poodle to stomach cancer. She made an adventurous trek to Texas with a limping vehicle and picked up a beautiful white poodle puppy who she calls Sunshine, and an older IG pup called Taylor.
Fun Stuff
Deerhounds went to Scottish Game gatherings this spring. Paul Bergman reports: “We had Nick and Torquil at the Woodland highland games... along with Cari Bowe and Billie Zinser's Deerhounds. We couldn't make Sunday but Cari and Billie were there to make sure that Deerhounds were well represented.” The Bergmans also attended the Campbell Games the next weekend.
Golden State Deerhound Club
The Golden State Deerhound Club was formed years ago to host the SDCA Western Specialty, which has always been in Lompoc with the Western Sighthound Combined Specialties. Joe and Jean Giles have chaired the show for many years. They have moved to Oregon and this year's Specialty was the last that they will chair. Since nobody volunteered to lead the club and chair a show in Lompoc, the venue was going to change to another location in the West. But a group has stepped up to keep the Specialty in Lompoc. They were elected to office at the annual meeting after the Specialty on July 23. The new GSDC officers are:
President, Rachel Mathews;
Vice-President and Show Chairman, Catherine Doyle;
Secretary, Maxine Schlundt;
and Treasurer, Carol McAllister.
Deerhound Health Update
In the July/August issue of the Claymore, the Scottish Deerhound Club of America’s magazine, there is an update on a few deerhound health issues in the minutes of the annual meeting. Following is a very brief summary.
Cystinuria: The University of Pennsylvania study is ongoing, and has collected urine samples, pedigrees, and some DNA. Although inheritance appears to be sex linked (carried on the X chromosome so it is passed on from the mother), that is probably not the only genetic factor which determines first, whether a dog has cystine in the urine, and second, which of those dogs form stones. There are so many possible unknown contributing factors that, at this point, no positive conclusions can be drawn.
Osteosarcoma: A study at North Carolina State University has been collecting information and samples from affected dogs and family groups since 1998. The goal is to identify a genetic marker statistically associated with the incidence of osteo in this group. So far, analysis strongly suggests that risk is related to a single genetic locus inherited in a recessive fashion. A wider range of samples and pedigrees will be collected, and they are very hopeful that a marker can be identified within a few years.
Cardiomyopathy: The SDCA subsidized a cardio clinic at the 2004 National Specialty to test dogs in order to establish normal echocardiographic parameters for Deerhounds. This information will allow identification of asymptomatic cardiomyopathy. (Ed. note: The organizers of the 2005 Specialty in Portland are hoping to offer the same clinic in the West.)
For the complete reports, see the SDCA website link to the Claymore.
