    President's Message

Happy New Year to you all. We are on the brink of a busy new season of activities. Right around the corner is the Santa Clara Valley KC Show at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose. Allyn Babitch has invited NCDC members and friends to her house for a get-together after the show on Sunday Feb 20 (the show is on Sunday and Monday, it being Presidents' Day weekend). We will send out an email update on details once we know when Deerhounds show.

The NCDC Annual Meeting will be on April 23 at the Chief Solano KC show in Vallejo. Details will be sent out when we know show times. Hopefully we can combine it with a potluck picnic again this year.

Many thanks to Jeanne Case for maintaining the website while I am trying to figure out how to do the updates. I am paying for being a Macophile in a Windows world! There are Fun Day photos up, as well as news updates. See it all at www.norcaldeerhounds.org.

Plans for the National Specialty in the Portland area in June are well underway. See the latest information at the SDCA website. We decided at the Fall meeting not to do anything as a group, but to encourage everybody to offer to help as individuals. It would be really fun to have a big NCDC contingent there.

Our 2004 Fun Day was exactly that - lots of fun. Well attended, a nice day, a nice location (although the green rooms could have been closer). It was great to have the Giles come from Oregon, and a real treat to have Ellen Pilling come from Nevada to be our judge. Everyone pitched in to help set up and tear down, the food was great, and thanks to all who were there.

Welcome to new members Burton Rockwell, Nancy Lovelady, Bonnie Eaton, and Chris Graham. Nancy Lovelady and Diane Bullard are the owners of Darcy (Lyonhil Darcy of McHan JC), who many of you know from the shows and coursing. Bonnie and Chris have wolfhounds in the Salinas area. They are the owner/breeders of Ch Darrowby’s Duncan of Oelmuhle, and breeders of his lovely sister Ch Darrowby’s Heidi of Gabriel.

January 15 marked the first birthday of our little orphan Annie, and the death of her mother Rhia, and the dark days that followed. To celebrate the occasion in a positive way, we took Annie and Randa on a birthday outing with Amy and Steve Poland and Siofra, her gangly son Sylvan, and their wolfhounds. We hiked the levees near Davis, and the dogs ran and played and Auntie Siofra tought her niece Annie how to chase jackrabbits. It was gorgeous and fun and what having deerhounds is all about, and a wonderful way to start the year.

Hoping to see you in the ring and on the field,

    Kris Smith
    President

    Fun Day Report

There was a good turnout for the ANNUAL NCDC FUN DAY in Pleasanton on October 16. We had a shady spot in a remote area of the Alameda County Fairgrounds with lots of room. Ellen Pilling was the judge for the Match in the morning, then was joined by Peggy Kopf to judge the costumes and games. Joan and Joe Giles came down from Oregon with their year old puppies and the the pups' mom Starr, and two of the kids (Amy and Brodie) walked away with Best and Best Opposite in Match. Amy and Steve Poland's three month old Sylvan stole the show with his puppy antics, tasting everything he met. Allyn and Jaylynn Babitch came with their Sea Poppy who was Open Bitch and Junior Handler with Jaylynn. Cari Bowe showed off her considerable dog training talent, winning the brace with Eamon and Andrew, then adding Warren for a spectacular leash round. She treated us to an obedience demonstration with Eamon, then won the Best Trick contest with a hilarious dance routine with Warren. She and Eamon won the Dress Up Race, but the special award for creative dressing went to Chris Wright, who put Glory's tail through one leg hole in her shorts and both her hind legs through the other, creating a kangaroo-ish gait on the home stretch.

There were a record seven entries in the costume contest, including Randa and Annie Smith as Miss Muffit and the Spider, Glory Wright decked out in a sheet as a Ghost, Nick Bergman looking very cool as a Coursing Dude and Torquil Bergman looking very Scottish as Laird McNeil. The Zinsers Emily and Andrew looked deliciious as a Strawberry and Tomato, and Eamon was a Pirate, complete with eye patch.

Jeanne Case came by for a deerhound fix and received compliments and thanks for the great job she did in creating the website. Christie Keith was there with Rebel, and it was nice to see him looking so good after his surgery.

Deerhounders appreciate good food, and there was plenty of it, including hot chili made the night before by Joan Giles and Kris Smith, heated in the Giles' motor home. The motor home was a godsend in another way, as the one thing missing from our site was a porta-potty. Lee Bergman brought a spectacular plate of gourmet doggie cookies for the fourlegged lunch bunch. It takes a combined effort to put on the Fun Day. Thanks to Kris Smith for the organization and supplies, Ellen Pilling for judging, to Peggy Kopf for assistant judging and secretarial duties, to Chris Wright and Amy Poland for ring stewarding, to Allyn Babitch for donating trophies and to Kris for donating ribbons and game prizes. Because of donated trophies and prizes, the day finished in the black.

    Tidbits

    At the Shows

Chris Wright’s Glory (Ch Windshift Wood Rose JC FCh) took the breed both days at the big DEL VALLE SHOWS on October 17 and 18. On Sunday, Winner Dog Glencrag’s Brodie (Giles) and Winner Bitch Sindar Sea Poppy (Babitch) earned their first points and first major. On Monday, with a smaller entry, young Windshift Bond earned his first point. It was nice to see such a good entry on Sunday. Christie Keith's Ch. Sindar Rebel of Caber Feidh was BOS, Sally Poole's Windshift Bond was RWD, and Cecilia Arnold's Margaret was RWB. Joe and Joan Giles also showed Starr and Amy, and Cecelia also had Mhairi. Nancy Lovelady was there with Darcy, Kris and Bayard Smith with Annie, and Virginia Gould with Windshift Byron. Amy Poland came by to watch and was volunteered to handle the trophies, which were supplied by NCDC.

Thanksgiving weekend saw Chris Wright's Glory take the breed again both days at the San Mateo Shows. Allyn Babitch's Sea Poppy went Winner Bitch both days for three wins in three times showing. She took Best of Winners on Saturday, while Sally Poole's Windshift Woodruff, Glory's brother, was Best of Winners on Sunday.

Sally Poole’s 2004 litter is making news on the East Coast, with both Baloo and Rue going to Sheila Matheson and Judith Bowman and a show career. Baloo is already a champion, finishing from the puppy classes with four group placements and multiple best puppy awards.

    On the Field

Big congratulations to Amy and Steve Poland and Barbara Mullis’s Ch Jihad’s Siofra JC, who has achieved performance heights in the Open Field Coursing world never before reached by a Deerhound. Siofra had a successful NOFCA hunt season in which she earned points in an open hunt with whippets, greyhounds, and salukis, a rare occurance for a deerhound. Then she went to the Grand Course the first weekend of February where she got her second Assisted Kill, finishing both her CC (Coursing Champion) and CM (Courser of Merit) titles. She went on to the finals and finished in a tie for tenth place, the first Deerhound in history to finish in the Top Ten. She won the award for High Scoring Bench Champion, and will be the first Deerhound to earn the SCDA’s Versatility Certificate with Open Field Coursing, and the only Deerhound to be both a Bench Champion and a Coursing Champion. Amy deserves a lot of credit for her careful management and conditioning of Siofra. Siofra was bred by Barbara and Charles Mullis, is by Ch Jihad Shaquille of Dunkeld by Jihad’s Zephyr of Dunkeld.

Nancy Lovelady and Diane Bullard's Darcy galloped her way to a 5 point major at the AKC lure coursing in Oakland on November 14. There were two full courses of deerhounds, all of whom ran beautifully, and it was a sight to see. Chris Wright's Glory was second, followed by her sister, Cari Bowe's Poppy, Billie Zinser's Andrew, Cari's Eamon , and Paul and Lee Bergman's Nick. Two youngsters were there for practice. The Smith's 10 month old Annie went all the way around with enthusiasm, and the Poland's 4 month old Sylvan entertained the crowd with a bouncing gallop out and back. It looks like there will be Deerhounds lure coursing in this area for some time. The Smith's Randa and the Zinser's Emily were there to cheer from the sidelines, so there were an amazing ten Deerhounds on the grounds.

ASFA lure coursing in Oakley on December 5 hosted by the Basenji club saw five Deerhounds competing. The Bergmans were there with Nick, Cari Bowe came with Poppy and Eamon, Billy Zinser had Andrew, and Ellen Pilling came over the mountains from Nevada with Summer. There were two run-offs, one for second and one for fourth. Final standings were Eamon, Andrew, Nick, Puppy, and Summer.

    Sad Goodbyes

Christie Keith and Kathleen McKenzie of Caber Feidh said goodbye to their 11 and a half year old Doughal (Ch. Doughal of Caber Feidh, JC) just before Christmas. After a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation about seven months earlier, he had done very well for quite some time, but finally went into congestive heart failure. He was a wonderful and loving companion, and has a full tribute on the Caber Feidh website.

Minutes from the NCDC Fall 2004 Meeting

    Saturday, October 16, 2004
    Alameda County Fairgrounds

Note: Secretary Cari Bowe wrote excellent minutes and sent them electronically to Kris Smith, who lost them in during a computer change, so these minutes have been compiled from Cari and Kris’s handwritten notes. Please contact Kris with additions and corrections.

The meeting was called to order by Prisident Kris Smith at 12:45 p.m.

    1. Present: Allyn and Jaylynn Babitch, Cari Bowe, Paul and Lee Bergman, Joe and Joan Giles, Christie Keith, Peggy Kopf, Ellen Pilling, Amy and Steve Poland, Kris and Bayard Smith, Chris Wright, Billie Zinser.

    2. The minutes of the Annual Meeting on April 17, 2004 were approved as written (motion by Amy Poland, seconded by Chris Wright).

    3. Treaaurer’s Report: Billie presented the year to date report, will get the end of year statement out at the end of October since there are no more expenses after the Fun Day. Memberships taken today for 2004 will be on 2004 stattement, those taken for 2005 will appear after Jan 1. Starting balance was $1501.49, current balance is $1285.49, without Fun Day proceeds. The email newsletter helps cut costs, as does the bank not chanrging a service charge, but the club is still not financially solid.

A discussion followed about to to cut costs and generate revenue. The big cost is insurance, which is the lowest we can get and necessary, so we need to increase revenue. Allyn suggested checking out Sun Valley Dog Fanciers for inclusion on individual match insurance or group matches. Other suggestions were made on how to generate more memberships by finding ways to make more people want to join and participate in the Fun Day and other new activities, and how to make it more welcoming to people who don’t compete with their deerhounds and feel like outsiders. Discussion about offering a doursing practice day, perhaps borrowing equipment from the Wolfhound club, or having a joint match. Allyn offered to host a social get together after the Santa Clara show in February. Kris, Billie, Lee, Paul, and Ellen will work on promoting more activities. An email questionnare will go out to ask members what activities they would like to see in the club.

Christie suggested encouraging Eastern breeders to have their N. California puppy buyers contact NCDC. She will write a letter to the Claymore.

The treasurer’s report was unanimously approved (motion by Allyn, second by Ellen).

    4. Old Business:

Website: The new website got great reviews from those who have had a chance to see it. Kris suggested we give a 2005 membership to Jeanne and Judd Case in appreciation. Kris will send notification of that.

Del Valle supported entry: This year (and last) the deerhound entry was not supported because it has to be supported by the SDCA, not NCDC; NCDC just supplied trophies. Kris will start proceeding to get an official supported entry for next year.

Western Regional Specialty: Will be held in Lompoc next year hosted by GSDC.

    5. New Business:

The NCDC Annual meeting will be held at the Vallejo show, April 23.

The 2005 National Specialty will be in Portland on June 9-12. We should try to help, people going should contact Lyn Robb via email to volunteer. NCDC will put an ad in the show catalog and will donate $25 toward the Winner Bitch trophy. The Bergmans will match that with another $25 in the name of their new company, seeitchaseit.com.

    6. Update of recent activities, shows:

  • Glory, BOB at Paicenes ASFA invitaional.
  • Eamon/Andrew got their JCs.
  • At the Iron Hound competition over Labor Day, Warren was the overall Iron Deerhound, Andrew won the straight racing phase and Poppy was first in the lure coursing.

    7. Announcements: Kris thanked Christie for her technical support of the website and email newsletters.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by Kris Smith, NCDC President

    Treasurer's Report

    Fellow Deerhounders,

2005 will be a very good year for our club. Because our Fun Day was so close to the end of the year, many members paid their 2005 dues in advance and as a result, we are starting the 2005 calendar on an upswing. A list of the members who have paid is below; the deposit was sent to the bank on 1/1/05.

The rest of us are reminded to renew for the year, to take advantage of all the benefits of supporting our local club. Our membership dues allow us to met our insurance obligations for our bi-annual meetings, buy advertisings for specialties, and contribute to trophies. Membership entitles us to:

  • Quarterly email newsletters,
  • Calendar of local deerhound events: shows, lure coursing, fun activities,
  • Fast results of area meets; show ring and field events,
  • Opportunities to contribute items to the Claymore for national recognition of our hounds,
  • Participate in NCDC meetings in Vallejo, Oregon, Lompoc,
  • Contribute items to our NCDC website,
  • And make suggestions to have a club that is responsive to make NCDC work for all of us.

I look forward to seeing you all soon, and wish you and your pets a healthy New Year.

    Billie Zinser
    Treasurer, NCDC

From Kris: Many thanks to these members who have renewed for 2005: Arnold, Babitch, Bergman, Bowe, Case, Giles, Keith, Pilling, Poland, Smith, and Zinser. And welcome to new members Eaton, Graham, Lovelady, and Rockwell.

Billie’s report shows that we ended the year with $24 less than what we had at the beginning, which is still a loss, but a much smaller one than in previous years. Thanks for your support! If you still need to renew for 2005, see the renewal form at the end of this newsletter.
