    President's Message

It's been a long time since the last email newsletter, so there is a lot of material in this issue. Life has changed dramatically for us, losing our two Deerhounds to a shocking accident, living without hounds for awhile, and then getting two puppies. Through the changes we received help and comfort from our friends in the Deerhound world, and met new friends as well. Many thanks to you all. We are having a wonderful time with our youngsters, Lucy and Logan, watching them learn about the world.

We were able to go to the National Specialty, taking our four month old Lucy to the Futurity. She broke her toe and couldn't show, but it was neat to see her Gabriel siblings take the honors in the baby puppy classes. We didn't make it to Lompoc, as that was the weekend I went to pick up Logan from Barbara Heidenreich. It was my first time flying with a dog, and he did much better than I did. The co-chairs for the Regional in 2006 will be our own Allyn Babitch along with Harriet King from San Diego. This duo will also be co-chairs for a bid for the 2008 National Specialty, so be prepared to pitch in.

Our annual Fun Day conformation match, costume contest, and games will be on Saturday, October 22 in conjunction with the Del Valle shows, as planned. However, AKC rules state that unsanctioned matches can't be happening on the same grounds at the same time as sanctioned events, so we will have a late afternoon event, starting the classes at 5 p.m. We will have our potluck and club meeting and take entries earlier, so we should have plenty of time to finish the event. The good news is that we will have a regular ring, close to the facilities.

There's lots of news here; new pups, new owners, new titles, people moving, and more, so enjoy.

    SDCA National Specialty in Oregon

Kudos to Lyn Robb and her crew for producing a wonderful National Specialty in Hillsboro, Oregon, on June 9 through 12. It was well done, and a treat to have it within driving distance of home. Following are some highlights about California dogs:

It was nearly a sweep of the top coursing spots for California runners, with Harriet King's Nate (Juraluv Nathaniel SC) taking BOB for the ASFA coursing on Saturday, then Cari Bowe's Poppy (DC Windshift Wildflower SC) taking the AKC BOB the next day. This was Poppy's second Specialty win in coursing. Renee Davis's Kent (Aionagh Caoinlan SC) won Flight A of the AKC Open Stakes, finishing his Field Champion title with three five point majors. Nate was second in the same flight, with Paul and Lee's Nick (Sindar Speedwell O'Windshift SC FCh) placing fourth there and also in Saturdays ASFA FC Stakes. In Flight B of the AKC Open Stakes, Billie Zinser's Windshift Blue Boy Andrew JC placed third, and he also received the NBQ in the previous day's ASFA Open Stakes.

Taking the "cute" honors on the schedule were the 3 to 6 month puppy classes in the Futurity, each of which had nine squirmy entries, representing three litters. Top honors went to Carol Gabriel and Bonnie Graham's kids out of Heidi (Ch Darrowby Heidi of Gabriel) by Ch Thistleglen Leeds, with the boys taking first, second, and fourth, and one of the girls winning the bitch class. Heidi went on to place second in the Futurity Brood Bitch class. Jeanne and Judd Case's Caerwicce's Londo at Baldana placed third in the Sweepstakes 6 to 9 dog class, and second in the Regular class. Renee's Kent took second in Open Dogs, with the Bergman's Nick in fourth place. Renee's Australian girl Jetsy (Claidhembor Ceitidh) took fourth in a large 6 to 9 puppy bitch class. It was a good show for California breeders, with Barbara Hurrie Mullis being the co-breeder of the Best of Breed winner, Peter Balzer's Ch Jihad Syrah of Dunkeld, and also her mother, Jihad Scotia of Dunkeld, who was Reserve Winner Bitch. Sally Poole is the breeder of Windshift Balmoral, owned by Sheila Mathieson and Judith Bowman, who went Winner Dog in the Regular Classes, and Best in Sweepstakes.

At the Awards dinner, Amy Poland accepted the first Versatility Certificate to include Open Field Coursing for her Ch Jihad's Siofra JC,CC,CM, CGC, co-owned with Barbara Mullis and bred by the Mullises. Siofra herself could not attend, as she was in a family way, a week away from delivering.

    SDCA Western Regional in Lompoc

Following are reports from people who attended the Western Regional Specialty in Lompoc on July 29, held in conjunction with the Western Sighthound Combined Specialty, and the Lompoc Valley shows the next two days:

Allyn Babitch, of Sindar Deerhounds, was the judge of the Sweepstakes classes. "I had one male and 9 bitches presented to me. Happily, my one male, Vale Vue Will O'The Wisp, was an outstanding fellow; and wound up going Best in Sweepstakes in the end. He displayed excellent conformation, with great curves, flow, balance, and proportion. He was quite sound, and moved nicely from the side, though I would, if I were to change him, add a little more reach in the side gait. He had a lovely coat, a dark eye, and a great presence. All in all a very worthy dog, and one I was pleased to see, as we're always on the lookout for good males in our breed!

My Best Opposite was a lovely bitch, Troon Jaraluv Silver Dawn. She also had curves in all the right places, and moved beautifully. She is, I discovered later, from the frozen semen breeding of the great "Fleers" (All Breed and Specialty Best in Show Winner Ch. Jaraluv the Future Factor), who has been gone for some time now. Modern technology allowed his genetics to be used after his passing, and the result is outstanding.

Either of these dogs I would have been thrilled to bring home, though I was assured by their owners that they are not available! Can't blame them. The overall quality was very nice, and I think that most of the puppies presented to me have the potential to do well in the show ring in future.

It was a lot of fun to preside over these youngsters, and I thank the Club for having me, and the puppy owners for showing to me."

Paul and Lee Bergman attended with their two boys. "Thanks to Rachel Mathews and her team for putting together this years Western Regional Specialty. The dinner set up by MaryAnn and Richard Rose as fabulous and the wine a very nice touch. Although Cari Bowe's entry for Poppy got lost in the mail, and there was no coursing, she and Billie Zinger showed up to cheer us on. We arrived on Thursday to set up camp, not knowing what the weekend would bring. After all it was Paul's first time showing since the boys were puppies and I was showing our dancing fool, Toquil, for the first time. The weather was perfect, the air full of anticipation. The bunnies donated by See It Chase It were a big hit with the doggys and the biodegradable poop bags a hit with their moms and dads.

By Sunday Paul was showing Nick like a pro, taking second to Jana and the Brinlee's Nickelodeon. Torquil on the other hand true to his dancing fool self, made up his own rules for the show and by Sunday had decided that it wasn't fair to make the judge come to him all that way across the ring. Instead Torquil met the judge half way giving him hugs and kisses and snuggles galore. His reward was a smile and lots of ear rubs. The Brinlees may have gone home with most of the trophies but as near as I could tell everyone went home a winner with new friends, good memories, and oh yes, lots and lots of puppy kisses."

From San Diego, Harriet King reports: "Marylane Brett and Norma Sellers came from the East Coast and the Brinlees came down from Washington. The weather was wonderful, as usual, and the shows well run. Jaraluv swept every major award except, I believe, for one Winners Bitch and one BOS. Michael went BoB all three days to increase his allbreed points standing even further. Put on your calendar Palm Springs, which is the first weekend after New Year's. It was voted the most beautiful show in America last year and deservedly so. Once you go, you will be hooked. If we get enough people this year, we can petition for a supported entry next year. So come join the fun."

The Winners Bitch and Best Opposite that Harriet mentions were two NCDC hounds. Darcy (Nancy Lovelady and Dianne Bullard's Lyonhil's Darcy of McHan JC) went WB on Sunday and finished her conformation championship. Carol Gabriel and Bonnie Graham's Ch Darrowby's Heidi of Gabriels was BOS at the Specialty on Friday. Congratulations to them both, and to the Bergman's Nick for his RWD on Sunday.

    Golden State Deerhound Club

Allyn Babitch reports, "The members of the Golden State Deerhound Club (which includes many menbers of the Northern California Deerhound Club) are enthusiastic about continuing to try to hold a Western Regional Specialty show in conjunction with the Western Sighthound Combined Specialties in Lompoc. Until this year, our very energetic and dedicated member Joan Giles chaired and ran the show- without her and her husband Joe the show probably wouldn't have continued as long as it did, and it certainly wouldn't have been as wonderful as it's always been. Joan and Joe left quite a legacy. They have moved to Oregon now, and will no longer be running the show, so it's up to the rest of us to pick up where they left off.

"This year, Catherine Doyle chaired the show, and did a fine job. Next year, Harriet King and I have agreed to co-chair the show, and we would like to start soliciting help and support for it. We need to have minimum entries of 35 for it to be allowed to continue; we need people to help in various jobs. We'll let you know as time goes by what needs doing, and hopefully there will be lots of volunteers!

And now for the big one- the GSDC will be submitting a proposal to host the 2008 National Specialty in conjunction with the Lompoc WSCS shows. Harriet and I have agreed to co-chair, and several other people have agreed to be part of the various committees, National Specialties take a lot to put on, and so we will be strongarming all of you to pitch in and do your part, and also to bring your dogs to show there!

As time goes on we'll outline what needs doing, so you all can help out. Thanks in advance for this too!"

"Thanks in advance for your help and support."

Allyn Babitch and Harriet King (contact Allyn at allyn_b@sindar.com with any questions, suggestions, or to offer help - thanks!)

    Raven's Osteosarcoma

It was just another night. I walked and fed the dogs, ate my dinner, watched some TV, checked my email, and got ready for bed. Just another night, except that when my deerhound Raven came to bed, she was carrying her left rear leg.

It was somewhat mysterious, because she'd been fine on the evening walk and now she was completely lame. And worse, she was clearly in terrible pain, as she couldn't lie still at all, tossing and turning on the bed even after I gave her pain medication. Her leg was slightly swollen below her hock, but not hot, and even though she wouldn't bear weight on it, she exhibited no pain when I felt it.

That was the moment everything changed, but I didn't realize it at first. Neither did Raven's vet, who thought it might be a cruciate ligament tear and suggested I see an orthopedist. But when I did, he wasn't under any illusions. I saw his face when he looked at her x-ray, before I looked at the image myself. They call it the starburst pattern, that outward explosion of the bone.

"We'd need a biopsy to be sure," he said. "But this is osteosarcoma."

After posting about Raven's diagnosis to Deerhound-L, I got an email from another breeder who told me about a dog of hers who had his leg amputated after an osteosarcoma diagnosis, at the age of six. Raven's age. He lived to be 12, she said - and died of a heart problem. That was the very first moment since that x-ray went up on the wall that it occurred to me that Raven might not die of this.

Do you know the number one way that osteosarcoma kills dogs? It's not the tumor itself. It's not metastases to the lungs. It's not the spread of the cancer to other bones. It's because their owners put them to sleep when they can't control the pain of the slowly disintegrating bone. We do not amputate the dog's leg to treat the tumor. We amputate it to eliminate the pain.

After hearing about Raven's diagnosis, a friend of mine with deerhounds, who is herself a human radiation oncologist, got veterinary oncologist Greg Ogilvie to phone me. "I heard you wanted some advice without any beating around the bush," he said. Then he told me: Amputation, chemo, supplements, diet. Do it all. Do it soon. Dogs, he assured me, are born with three legs and a spare. She'll be fine as a three-legged dog.

A dozen other deerhound owners told me the same, writing me earnest emails about their three-legged dogs, about how they ran and played and went to the park on three legs. About the early adjustment period, sometimes rough. To prepare me for the worst but assure me that there is a promised land of three-legged doggedness, where the deerhounds are just as unlikely to retrieve a thrown ball as when they had four legs, but will still run after it if you are dumb enough to throw it.

On June 10, Raven's leg was amputated. It was rough going, as she suffered a post-surgical aspiration pneumonia that nearly killed her. She was in the care of my friend, internal medicine specialist Helen Hamilton, in Fremont, and Helen brought her through after five days in the hospital and the surgical removal of my entire life savings. After that bad start, things got better. Before Raven's stitches were even out, she was running and using the stairs. She seemed so incredibly happy to have that useless, painful leg gone, to be off the pain medications that upset her stomach and fogged her brain.

"Think about how a female dog pees!" one email correspondent had beseeched me after I posted to the deerhound email list. "Don't mutilate your dog just to keep her a little longer!"

Raven just moves her one of her front legs back a little to form a stable tripod when she urinates. Problem solved.

Moving her bowels took a bit more practice, and she sometimes had to take a step or two in the middle of it as she lost her balance, and once or twice she sat somewhat unexpectedly. She always positioned herself next to the fence, although she never actually leaned on it. After a few days, she got the hang of pooping, too, and that was the last of the real hurdles.

Will Raven be one of the 15 percent of dogs with osteosarcoma who has amputation and chemo and never has a recurrence of their cancer? Or maybe one of the 30 percent who makes it to two years? I don't know. But I know that, for now, Raven is happy, and as long as that's true, so am I.

    Tidbits

    At the Shows

At the Santa Clara Valley Kennel Club's show in San Jose on February 20, Chris Wright's Ch Windshift Wood Rose JC FCh (Glory) won the Breed, with Allyn Babitch's Sea Poppy going Best of Winners over the Winner Dog, the Bergman's Sindar Speedwell O Windshift JC FCh. It was nice to see Virginia Gould there with Windshift Byron, from Sally Poole's year old litter. Allyn Babitch hosted a get-together at her house after the show at which there was a a groaning table of teatime sweets to keep us going. Barbara Ballinger was there with her two year old Monty (Fernhill's Manticore) from the Fernhill's Reiba X Ch Lehigh Yuill litter. He is a handsome boy and we look forward to seeing more of him. The Weisses were there with their elderly lady Emily, who was not acting elderly at all. Jeanne and Judd Case, Chris Wright, Paul and Lee Bergman, and Kris and Bayard Smith rounded out the group.

The Skyline Dog Fanciers shows in San Mateo on March 19 and 20 saw six Deerhounds compete. The Poland's and Mullis's Ch Jihad Siofra JC CC took the Breed on Saturday, with the Bergman's Nick (Sindar Speedwell O Windshift JC FCh) going Opposite Sex and Best of Winners. Allyn Babitch's Sindar Sea Poppy was the Winner Bitch. RWD was Windshift Byron (Gould), followed by Windshift Woodruff (Poole). RWB was Lyonhil's Darcy of McHan JC (Bullard/Lovelady). On Sunday Siofra stayed home and it was Poppy taking the Breed and making the cut in the Group, with the other placings the same.

The Bergmans travelled to the San Juan Capistrano show on May 14 and 15, taking not only their Nick, but also Allyn Babtich's Sea Poppy. On Saturday Poppy went Winner Bitch for a her second major, and Nick went Winner Dog on Sunday.

    In the Field

At the ASFA trials in Oakley on February 12 and 13, Eamon the Demon Bowe won both days over Field Champions Nick Bergman and Glory Wright, and Open competitors Andrew Zinser and Warren Bowe. Eamon and Nick tied on the first BOB run on Saturday, so they had to run again, with Eamon squeaking by Nick on the second go. It's been awhile since there were both Open and Field Champion Deerhound classes at an ASFA trials in Northern California, so things are looking up for local lure coursing.

Cari Bowe and Billie Zinser were at the AKC Lure Coursing in Stockton both Saturday and Sunday April 30 and May 1. Billie's Andrew and Cari's Poppy ran, with Poppy winning both days. Andrew and Billie's other Deerhound, Emily, were staying with Cari while Billie recovered from surgery on her leg. Cari brought Emily to the meet, and Billie was thrilled to be able to spend some time with her. Billie reports, "Poppy is such a beautiful runner, her lithe body rounded the course so gracefully. Her gangly son, Andrew, who runs all elbows and hocks, had a wonderful time, and is happy just to be chasing something."

    Happy Birthday

Ellen Pilling's Glayva (Am/Can Ch Fernhill's Glayva) celebrated her tenth birthday, hitting the double digit mark on March 31. Peggy Kopf reports: "She is still very active and chasing the jacks with her pal, Summer, in the wilds of Nevada. Way to go, Glayva!"

Rosie, Ch. Rose of Caber Feidh, owned by Christie Keith and Kathleen McKenzie, turned 12 in July.

    In the Nursery

Carol Gabriel got an early Valentine's Day present. Her lovely Heidi (Ch Darrowby's Heidi of Gabriel, co-owned with Bonnie Graham) delivered a litter on February 12, sired by Ch Thistleglen Leeds, a result of AI with cooled fresh semen. Carol reported: "Heidi has a baseball team ( 9 boys) and 3 cheer leaders ( 3 girls). The puppies are thriving. Heidi actually whelped 16!! She is such a wonderful mother - very attentive and careful. We started her out with 6 pups at a time but now she takes care of all 12. She is doing everything right. My Vet says 'Heidi is a real trooper.'" Incredibly, Heidi delivered all 16 pups in 18 hours, with no assistance necessary.

Chris Wright is the proud "papa" of a strong little boy out of his bitch, Glory (Ch Windshift Wood Rose) by Ch Thistleglen Leeds. Little "Humphrey" is the miracle survivor of a litter shadowed with difficulties. He had a rough start, but is now tearing it up like a little boy should.

A week after receiving her Versatility Certificate, and the day of the Summer Solstice and full moon, the Poland's Ch Jihad's Siofra JC CC CM delivered 2 healthy girls, a result of conception with frozen semen from Ch Ardkinglas Taurus. This cross produced one male puppy last year, Greybeard's Sylvanus, so now Amy and Steve have a complete "litter."

    New Kids on the Block

Jeanne and Judd Case are the proud owners of two youngsters from Rachel Mathews' two November litters. A girl named Lyta from Caerwicce's Uncloudy Day (Natasha) by Jaraluv's Nemesis, and a boy named Londo from Ch Evista of Vale View, also by Jaraluv's Nemesis.

Barbara Ballinger, who lost her lovely Fiona to a freak accident a year and a half ago, has had Monty (Fernhill Maniticore) for a year now and is ready to bring him out. He was co-bred by Susan Trow and Barb Heidenreich. He was born in Canada, grew out in Texas, and returned to Canada before coming to live in California.

Bayard and Kris Smith are thrilled to be the new owners of two new puppies. In May they brought home a girl from Carol Gabriel's litter from Heidi by Leeds. She is an energetic focused little dynamo, and they hope she will enjoy lure coursing as well as showing. Her name is Gabriels Lucinda of Jeffcairn, aka Lucy. In July Kris went to Toronto to pick a puppy from Barb Heidenreich's Roslyn to Atticus litter. She came home with a lovely boy who will be named Fernhill's Logan of Jeffcairn.

Marilyn Terry reports about her new little girl: "I drove up to the Deerhound Specialty in Oregon in June and brought back with me Gaelic, a beautiful brand-new, bright and lively Tannochbrae puppy sired by Lyn Robb's almost 10-year-old Fin (Ch. Boardwalk's Dr. Findlay JC) and out of Cali, (Ch. Tannochbrae's Calapooya JC), the litter sister to my Rune who died so suddenly last October. So Gaelic is a very special puppy for me. Lara, who was so traumatized by Rune's death and who lost all joy of life at losing her life-long companion, has been transformed by the new puppy. She is totally 'in love' and she is now a different, revitalized being and back to her former self after months of lying around looking like an old bearskin rug. She is a wonderful 'aunt' to the puppy and plays with Gaelic so carefully and puts up with all the puppy antics, although she can be a little grumpy if she wants to be left alone."

    Miscellaneous Fun Stuff

Paul and Lee Bergman report: "There were four Deerhounds at the Sacramento Valley Scottish Games & Gathering April 23 & 24. The Deerhound appeared to be one of the highlights of the Scottish Animals exhibit as we always had a crowd. Cari Bowe and Lee & Paul Bergman spent a good part of their time explaining the difference between Deerhounds and Wolfhounds. The "lads" Andrew, Eamon, Nick and Torquil were exceptionally tolerant of the uneducated masses, forgoing their usual daylong naps to been fawned over by their many admirers. Many people had never seen a Deerhound in person and were mesmerized by the elegance and gentleness of the breed." Cari adds. "The games were great. The Bergman/Bowe display had four Deerhounds and a Smooth Collie. We were unphased by rain, thanks to Lee and Paul shoehorning a couple of canopies into their loaded van!"

From Harriet King: "The Bergmans, Renee Davis and I attended a really informative seminar, Journey through the Performance Sighthound, given by the famous Dr. James Radcliffe and Dr. Beth Coney. It was held in Pasadena on July 23-24, and was their first one on the Pacific Coast. It was a two day hands-on seminar covering training, nutrition, injuries and their repair and rehabilitation, among other topics. The hands-on part showed you 1) how to examine your dog every day and 2) how to do a good doggy massage. We got to practice on six whippets and the all-time open field champion saluki. We could ask all the questions we wanted. Among the on-screen dogs were Rory and Buzz, Marylane Brett's boy who went on to become a dual champion after Dr. Radcliffe put his paw back together."

    Sad Goodbyes and Hard Times

Kris and Bayard Smith lost their puppy Jeffcairn Leannan (Annie) and her aunt Sindar Randa in an accident in early March. While on a walk, the dogs ran off after something, got out of sight, and never came back. A search was mounted, but they were never seen. Eventually, both bodies floated to the surface of a nearby reservoir. The reservoir was lined with slick plastic which prevented the dogs from climbing out once they got in the water.

Raven, Sindar Raven of Caber Feidh, owned by Christie Keith, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on May 31 and had her left rear leg amputated on June 10. She's doing great (see story above) as a three legged dog and is undergoing chemotherapy to prevent the spread of the cancer.

Duncan, owned by Diane Fairchild, littermate of 12 year old Rosie, passed away on July 16.

Minutes from the Annual Meeting of the Northern California Deerhound Club

    April 23, 2005
    Solano County Fairgrounds

The meeting was called to order by President Kris Smith at 1:40 pm. The presence of a quorum was verified.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as they stood in the last newsletter.

President Smith announced that the current slate of officers has agreed to serve for another year. These are: Kris Smith, president; Amy Poland, vice-president; Cari Bowe, secretary Billie Zinser, treasurer; Christie Keith, member-at-large; Sally Poole, past president. This slate was approved from the floor without further nominations.

In the treasurer's report, Billie noted that the club almost broke even in 2004, and she anticipated higher costs in 2005. No trophies had been yet donated for this year, and donated trophies would be important to allow for breaking even again this year. Kris asked for money-making comments and suggestions. Cari noted the Irish Wolfhound Club does ice cream socials and walks in Monterey. Billie mentioned meetings at Fort Funston monthly by a Yahoo group. Kris expressed concerns about Deerhounds running off-leash, and it was agreed that on-leash activities would be an advisable precaution for gatherings, with all off-leash events to be approached with caution and forethought, with consideration of individual dogs involved. Chris suggested adding a practice lure run to Fun Day. A move to work on a short puppy out-and-back run was approved from the floor.

Fun Day, now scheduled for October 22 in Pleasanton, was discussed as new business. However last year's location has not yet been approved by this year's organizers of the Del Valle show. It was noted that previously the Cases had been able to line up St. Mary's College as a Fun Day site, and that possibly someone could pursue this option again. Kris observed that Cari had offered to help organize games, and complimented her skills as a dog trainer. Trophy donations for the match were requested. Cecilia Arnold has agreed to be the Club's judge and to donate trophies. Sally Poole has agreed to donate trophies for the supported entry, scheduled for October 23. Donations of further appropriate treasures "home gathering dust on the shelves" were solicited by Kris for trophies.

Discussion was held on an issue raised privately with Kris by Allyn Babitch, who was not able to attend the meeting. She had suggested it would be appropriate for the NCDC to host a National Specialty, noting that it had last done so 10 years ago. Kris had also discussed this privately with Sally Poole and Christie Keith and spoke for them in the meeting. All standing officers agreed that they were not comfortable hosting a national specialty. Kris felt that she did not have the experience, and of the three club members who did, Allyn was too busy with the life of her family to chair the show; Sally Poole said she had looked into venues previously for a show of this magnitude and found nothing appropriate for housing and show facilities. She concluded that the Bay Area and Northern California are too expensive to host this show. Kris said Sally also believes there is not adequate depth of experience among enough people here to attempt a show of this magnitude. Cari noted that the Monterey Irish Wolfhound Club hosted a National and that it took a lot of work and expense. Kris noted that this year's Specialty in Portland required the input of 20 people plus the show chair; that with conformation, racing, coursing, Futurity, 3-generation classes, the organization required is just huge. She stated there are not enough people locally interested in showing; from the show today, out of 4 entered, 1 showed. She suggested that if enough people were interested in showing, a show committee could be put together to submit a proposal for hosting a national. If there were not enough people for a committee, obviously there would not be enough to support a specialty. A three-year lead time is required. With no volunteers for such a committee today, the topic was tabled until next year.

Upcoming events include the National Specialty in Portland, Oregon, June 9 -12. The Western Regional Specialty will be in Lompoc, CA, June 29. Judges will be William Bergum for regular classes, and (our own!) Allyn Babitch for Sweeps.

Chris's Glory has puppies due June 6 or 7. Carol's 12 puppies were 10 weeks old at the time of this meeting. AKC coursing was held May 1 in Lodi.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:20 pm.

Submitted by Barbara Ballinger, acting Secretary.
