It's the story of two dogs, both bred by Wall, one of whom goes off to New York City to learn to be a service dog for Benjamin, the other to stay behind and learn to be a working stockdog.

One team deployed to Japan almost immediately.
<P>
The SDF's <a href="http://www.searchdogfoundation.org/98/html/1_featured.html">Jim Boggeri</a> will be joining us for a live radio interview on Wednesday, March 16, from 9-9:30 PM Eastern Time. Jim will be bringing listeners up to date on what's happening with the search teams in Japan, and sharing his experiences as a search dog handler.
<P>
He'll be interviewed by <a href="http://facebook.com/DrMartyBecker">Dr. Marty Becker</a>, resident veterinarian on "Good Morning America" and "The Dr. Oz Show," and father of dog-trainer Mikkel Becker, who is an evaluator for SDF. With Dr. Becker will be veteran journalist and blogger Gina Spadafori of <a href="http://www.petconnection.com">PetConnection.com</a>.
<P>
Boggeri is a captain with the Marin County Fire Department in the San Francisco Bay Area, a Type I advanced FEMA certified canine search specliast and a member of FEMA ASAR Task Force 4.
<P>
He joined forces with Recon, a yellow Lab, in 2001. Since then, they have responded to numerous disasters, including Hurricanes Rita and Katrina in 2005 as well as Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008. Jim recently added a second canine to the team, another yellow Lab named Nino, with whom he is currently working toward certification.
<P>
If you'd like to ask Jim questions during the interview, which he will be able to respond to on the air, join other listeners in <a href="http://chat.pethobbyist.com/login.php?room_id=1001">the Auditorum chat room</a>.

<P>
Winograd, author of "<A HREF="http://www.doghobbyist.com/books/bookdetail.php?ASIN=0979074312">Redemption: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation and the No Kill Revolution in America</A>,"and head of the <a href="http://www.nokilladvocacycenter.org/">No Kill Advocacy Center</a>, will be talking about how the specter of "animal hoarding" is being raised to prevent access by rescue groups to animals slated to die in shelters. He'll talk about issues of transparency and power, as well as experiences in California with the the Hayden Law, the Companion Animal Protection Act in Delaware, and the proposed New York State "Oreo's Law."
<P>
Winograd will be interviewed by journalist <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ByChristieKeith">Christie Keith</a>, pet columnist for the <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/columns/yourwholepet/archive/">San Francisco Chronicle/SFGate.com</a> and a blogger at Pet Connection, who has been producing Chat Month for PetHobbyist.com for the last ten years.

<em>Please join us on Friday, March 4, at 9:30 PM Eastern Time/6:30 PM Pacific Time, in <a href="http://chat.pethobbyist.com/login.php?room_id=1001">The Auditorium</a>.</em>
<P>
<IMG SRC="http://www.connectedbypets.com/blog/uploads/hector.jpg" align="right" vspace="5" hspace="5" width="200">Then on Sunday, March 6, we'll be welcoming a panel of rehabbers, rescuers and owners of former fighting pit bulls, including two of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels.
<P>
While some consider Michael Vick a hero, pit bull lovers know better. They also know who the heroes really are: The dogs who overcame horrific beginnings to become loving companions and even therapy dogs.
<P>
On our panel will be Andrew "Roo" Yori, who shares his life with ex-Vick dog Hector.
<P>
Known as "Hector the Inspector" by his friends, his list of titles is impressive by any standards. He passed the Canine Good Citizen test twice, was certified as a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International, and passed the American Temperament Testing Society test. Hector's life motto? "Making up for lost time." Learn more about Hector at his <a href="http://www.hectorthepitbull.com/">website</a>.
<P>
<img width="250" src="http://www.connectedbypets.com/blog/uploads/leo.jpg" align="left" vspace="5" hspace="5" alt="" />When Marthina McClay of <a href="http://www.ourpack.org/leo.html">Our Pack</a> watched the initial raid on the Bad Newz compound, she was drawn to one dog who stopped and hammed for the cameras. She tried not to think about him, though, knowing that fight bust dogs never survived their "rescue."
<P>
But times were about to change. When the dogs were allowed a chance at life Marthina and Our Pack took on a hyper dog named Bouncer.
<P>
A name change, a home and a lot of love later, Leo emerged. Proud and dedicated, Leo works as a therapy dog. He visits cancer patients weekly at a local facility and puts on his inner clown. He, like Hector, has passed his Canine Good Citizen test as well as the Therapy Dogs International test. He has won an achievement award for his work from the Animal Farm Foundation. He also prefers his bed blankets messy instead of folded and neat. A perfect day is playing with his de-squeaked rubber bone and snuggling with in the bed.
<P>
<img width="250" src="http://www.connectedbypets.com/blog/uploads/cleo.jpg" vspace="5" hspace="5" align="right" alt="" />PetHobbyist.com's own Cindy Steinle will also be on the panel. She has shared the story of her girl, Cleo, <a href="http://www.pethobbyist.com/sitenews/archives/412-Protesting-Michael-Vick.html">before</A>. Confiscated during a dog fight right in November 2007 in Milwaukee, she came to live with Steinle and her husband in December 2007, just as the Vicktory crew was gaining their freedom. The histories were the same, but the outcome was different. In Milwaukee there were no arrests, press coverage or outrage. The owner surrendered custody and went on his way.
<P>
Often times Steinle's most challenging dog, Cleo is an ambassador for the breed, as well as for the ability to love despite her past. She partners with Chicagoland Bully Breed Rescue sanctuary dog Vinnie, also a victim, to be a witness against the horrors of dog fighting. Her scars were not on the outside, but inside. She has overcome a lot in her short life and works tirelessly to show that each dog, no matter their history, has a chance at a life. Chicagoland Bully Breed Rescue has a long history of working with dogs from dog fighting homes. If they can get the shelters to release them to us, they give them a shot.
<P>
All these panelists work with training, testing and socialization of their beloved dogs was fueled by the "something special" they saw in each and every one of these dogs. We hope you can join Roo, Marthina and Cindy on Sunday March 6 at 8 pm Eastern Time/5 PM Pacific Time in the <a href="http://chat.pethobbyist.com/login.php?room_id=1001">Auditorium</a> to learn more about what it takes to rehabilitate and live with these incredible dogs.
<P>

<B>Panel Discussion with IMOM<BR>
9 PM Eastern Time in <A HREF="http://chat.pethobbyist.com/login.php?room_id=1001">the Auditorium</A><BR></B>
<IMG SRC="http://www.pethobbyist.com/sitenews/uploads/imom-banner1.jpg" align="left" vspace="5" hspace="5">Times have been hard -- brutally hard -- on all kinds of charitable efforts, and animal causes are no exception. How can animal welfare organizations beat the times and keep helping pets in need -- and how can animal lovers still help animals when their wallets are feeling the pinch as well?
<P>
That's the topic we'll be tackling on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 9 PM Eastern Time, when we're joined by <A HREF="http://www.imom.org">IMOM</A> founder/president Jacki Hadra and IMOM vice-president Cindy Wilson for a panel discussion with Christie Keith on "Keeping help flowing to animal causes in a recession."
<P>
Few groups understand better than IMOM just how difficult it is for people to cope with an inability to pay their pets' veterinary bills. They've been making grants and helping pet owners raise money for procedures for pets whose owners can't handle the costs on their own. But tough times have made it hard for them to keep helping.
<P>
If you're a rescue group or are trying to raise money to help animals, find out from others in the same boat what tips and techniques work better in tough times. And if you're an animal lover, find out how you can help not just IMOM but all kinds of animal organizations, just how little it can really take to make a difference in a sick or injured pet's life, and how much difference that can make for the pet's owner, too.
<P>
Bring your questions and comments, as you'll be able to share them in our chat room while listening to the <A HREF="http://www.pethobbyist.com/articles/streamingchat.html">streaming audio</A> interview!

<B>Unleashed: The newsletter of DogHobbyist.com</B><BR>
January 2010
<P>
<B>A new year</B>
<P>
For many of us, the last year has been a tough one. Rising unemployment and housing problems have seen many families struggling to provide for themselves and still be able to do right by their family pets. Organizations aimed at sheltering, re-homing, fostering and providing medical support to companion animals have seen a decline in donations, and those with endowments and other forms of investment have seen their revenues plummet, too.
<P>
And yet -- shelter and rescue adoptions on the United States have never been at higher levels, providing foster care has enjoyed a surge in popularity, and kill rates in many communities are at all-time lows. The love we feel for our pets is, apparently, a powerful force to reckon with, even in hard times.
<P>
DogHobbyist.com's parent site, PetHobbyist.com, and its sister site, RescueNetwork.org, are happy to be partnering with an historic Ad Council campaign, <A HREF="http://theshelterpetproject.org">The Shelter Pet Project</A>, to make sure people are aware of all the wonderful animals available for adoption through shelters and rescue groups. We hope you'll visit the SPP and become part of its three-year multi-media campaign to get dogs and cats into forever homes.
<P>
We've also begun a series of special guest chats on Ending Pet Homelessness in America. Last month, we welcomed Ryan Clinton of FixAustin.org, and tomorrow, Jan. 4, at 9 pm Eastern Time/6 PM Pacific Time, we're happy to present an evening with Holly Lewis, president of <a href="http://www.awarewisconsin.com/index.html" >The Alliance of Wisconsin Animal Rehoming Efforts</a> (AWARE), to discuss how to start rescuing pets in your community, and how to create valuable networks between shelters and rescue organizations.
So you want to get involved in rescuing homeless pets in your community, or are even thinking of starting your own organization. What does it really take? Are the problems too large to overcome?
