The use of dogs as draft animals has a long history. Newfoundlands hauled fishing nets in to shore for their owners, Swiss Mountain Dogs and Rottweilers hauled carts containing farm produce to market for their owners, and numerous large breeds have been used over the centuries to haul firewood home. It surprises many people to learn how many varieties of working dogs were bred specifically for draft work. Australia's Jim Walsh is the inventor of a small cart widely used in carting with "mini horses and big dogs." Come find out the benefits of health and enjoyment for you and your dog from getting involved in this sport!

From Dr. Jeff: "Like most little kids, all I wanted to be when I grew up was a veterinarian. According to my folks, that's all I ever talked about. Growing up in a household with dogs, this wasn't such an unusual dream. The unusual part about it was that I followed this dream into adulthood. With me, I think becoming a veterinarian was more of a calling than a mere childhood dream. Now, over 20 years out of school and practicing, I'm still in heaven! As many of you know, over the years my career has branched out into many different directions--all revolving around veterinary medicine and my love of our animal friends." Dr. Werber is Lassie's veterinarian, and has also cared for the pets of stars including Ben Affleck, Julia Roberts, and Mandy Moore. He is also a spokesperson for Home Again pet microchips.

Her award-winning books, articles and columns are aimed at helping other dog lovers and those searching for a companion or show dog.
Adoption Contracts and Screening Panel Discussion

Adoption Contracts and Screening Panel Discussion
http://www.doghobbyist.com/articles/RescueContracts.html
Friday, Nov. 9, 2007
9-10 PM ET

When news broke that Ellen Degeneres and Portia De Rossi had found a new home for a dog they had adopted from a Southern California rescue group, the spotlight was turned on the many requirements and contract provisions of organizations that find homes for pets in need.

Some pet owners wondered at what point they really owned the pets they had adopted. Some became mistrustful of pet adoption. Others told stories of being disqualified by what they saw as too-stringent adoption screening procedures.

Why do rescue groups, shelters, and other groups have contracts and screening processes? Do such requirements result in more and better homes for pets? Do some groups go too far? Did this incident give rescue an unfair bad rap, or point out a possible weakness in the rescue system?

Join us on Friday, November 9, at 9:00 pm ET in The Dog Den to meet with several rescue representatives and find out what kind of requirements and contracts they have, how they came to have them, what it means to adopt a pet from a rescue group, and get your questions about adoption answered by the people in the front lines.

This will be a moderated discussion chat, all are welcome to attend.
From DogHobbyist.com
July 2007

Comments from Newsletter Pack Leader

PetHobbyist.com staffers were among the first to dig deep into the story behind the pet food recall. PHChristy contributed to the coverage at PetConnection.com, where she is a contributing editor, and Therese Kopiwoda, the marketing director for PetHobbyist.com, created one of the disaster’s most important resources, http://www.thepetfoodlist.com.

Thanks from all of us at DogHobbyist.com to the site’s owner, Jeff Barringer (who is himself owned by two rescued Rhodesian Ridgebacks, so you know he’s a great guy) for generously letting his staff and his site support this effort to keep our pet food supply safe and prevent anything like this from ever happening again.

Also: It’s that time of year. Do your dogs have problems with fireworks phobia? Help is here:
Summer Time Cautions
by Liz Phipps, CVT

Watching the beautiful summer weather approach, many of us grab the leash and take our canine companions out to enjoy it; walking, hiking, camping and even just out to the park. Although a great time is sure to be had by all, many people forget to be careful about some of the itty-bitty, yet significant dangers their canine pals can come across. The warmer weather brings more insects like mosquitoes and ticks. Although they may be same, these insects often carry diseases that can make dogs quite ill.

First would be exposure to Heartworm disease. Heartworm disease is a parasitic infection of “worms” that live and grow is a dogs’ heart and lungs. Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes. The microfilaria (baby heartworms) grow inside the mosquito and when it bites the dog, the microfilaria transfer into the dogs’ bloodstream. From there, they move into the heart and grow. When the population of adult worms becomes significant, signs of the infection may be noticed; exercise intolerance, coughing, shortness of breath and lethargy to name some. If left untreated, Heartworm disease is fatal. Treatment of the disease is not only very hard on the dog, but it can have many complications and side effects. This is why is it very important to follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding testing for Heartworm disease and using the proper preventative protocol for the area you live in. The prevention is one pill, once a month. It is simple and saves you and your dog a lot of pain and
heartache.

Next, we move onto ticks. Ticks are tiny insects that live in wooded areas and tall grasses. They feed on the blood of mammals and can be host to several bacterial infections that greatly affect dogs (as well as people!). The most prevalent being Lyme, with some of the less known being Ehrlichia (2 common strains exist of this disease) and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. These are only the most common of tick-borne diseases that can affect dogs. The symptoms are similar and can often be confused with each other or other diseases altogether. Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: unexplained lameness (often in multiple areas), lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss, diarrhea and lymph node swelling. Always let your veterinarian know if your dog is, is going to be or has been exposed to ticks so that they may advise you on proper prevention (including possible vaccinations) and annual blood testing for these diseases. Do not start a flea/tick control medication without co
nsulting your veterinarian first – not all the topical preventions are the same, and many may not actually give your dog the coverage they need. Although these diseases are treatable, it really is far safer to prevent the problem than it is to treat it.
Brutus’ Favorite Place: Vet?

Ohhh we are in the truck and going to one of my FAVORITE places! I love my vet! The ladies love to get kisses, I get to sit on a chair and visit! And then I get to go in a room with the coolest man other than my daddy! My Dr. Paul. The only problem is I had to take a bath today and well bullies are made of sugar and melt when we get too wet. Momma didn't want us stinking like sweaty dogs. So Caesar and I smell like oatmeal.

We had to get some shots today! It doesn't hurt a bit, but they are for very special things. Momma said my brother and I needed to get a wellness panel. She says its because of the bad foods they keep telling people to stop feeding. Our food was safe and never on the lists, but momma wants to make sure our insides are working good, because she cant see through my belly. Plus I am an older guy and when you get up there in years, momma says a good defense is a good offense.

The other thing we had a shot for was the Heartworm and Lyme Disease test. Its skeeter season, and time to check and make sure our hearts have no worms. Momma sez heartworm is a bad sickness and she has seen puppers sick with it. While we don't get a lot of medicine our heartworm treatment is one big thing we never miss! We never did have a tick, well Caesar has a few but he isn't right in the head, but momma still checks us for Lyme disease.

I tried a lime once, and I didn't like it, but momma sez I can still get the disease. Dr. Paul is very gentle and gives some great belly rubs. Dr. Paul is very happy that I lost my winter chubbies. I am now a lean mean Bulldoggie machine! It is very important with my bad feets to stay skinny. Dr Paul also says a chubby pupper can have lots of problems inside and not know it! Now they are covered in white hair and drool. But he still gives me lots of hugs, kisses and cookies! I love my Dr. Paul.

Signed Brutus the Bullheaded Bulldoggie
Book reviews by Melanie Martinez
Bookstore editor

Being off for the summer is one of my favorite times of the year. Not because I'm able to lounge around at the beach all day or take a boat ride around the harbor. It's because I'm able to increase my love for reading books. I find nothing more relaxing then getting up before any one else in our household, brew some coffee and kick my feet up on the patio with a good book. Unfortunately, I find myself having way to much to read and the list keeps growing but below are 5 of my top books to read this summer that involves our beloved canines.

Second Chances: More Tales of Found Dogs - is a heartwarming reading about ordinary people and there dogs who they were fortunate to have been saved. Each story is different but one thing remains the same, the power of love between each one.

Why Do Dogs Drink Out of the Toilet?: 101 of the Most Perplexing Questions Answered About Canine Conundrums, Medical Mysteries and Befuddling Behaviors - An entertaining book that takes a look at the myths, behaviors and facts of our beloved companion. What more do you want from a book that provides the dogs side of view, humor and makes sense?

Stop the Shots!: Are Vaccinations Killing Our Pets? - There are dangers with pet vaccines that most of us pet owners are unaware about. Education is the key in helping us make decisions in what is the best way that we can provide for our pet. John Clifton provides us with an easy to read book to learn about the risks and benefits of vaccinations.

Home Waters: Fishing with an Old Friend: A Memoir - Home Waters is a story of a month long trip between a man and his golden retriever Nellie, whom he just recently found out is very ill with tumors. Believing this will be there final trip together both head out west to visit and relive memories they both endured. Beautiful tale about rebirth instead of ending.

Smoky Mountain Tracks: A Raine Stockton Dog Mystery (Raine Stockton Dog Mysteries) - It's wintertime and a child has been kidnapped and left in the wilderness alone. It's up to Raine Stockton and her new tracking dog Cisco to find this child. But first they must learn to accept and trust one another. This is the first book in the series of Raine Stockton.
Panel on the Pet Food Recall - Tues May 8 10 PM ET

PetHobbyist.com invites you to attend a special panel discussion of the pet recall crisis, on Tuesday, May 8 at 10 PM Eastern Time.

When Menu Foods, back on March 16, announced its first recall of pet foods due to melamine contamination, the mainstream media was only briefly interested.

To a small group of bloggers, it was apparent from the first days that this story was much larger than most people thought. They began compiling data, comparing information, collecting personal stories, and digging for facts. Since then, there have been dozens of additional recalls, threats to the human health supply, a re-evaluation of international food safety standards, and a rising wave of frightened and angry pet owners.

PetHobbyist.com, on behalf of founder Jeff Barringer and its DogHobbyist.com, CatHobbyist.com, and PetSupport.net communities, invites you to attend an online panel discussion with the bloggers who have been following the pet food crisis from the beginning, to discuss the story behind the recall, what's likely to happen next, and what pet owners can do to protect their pets now and in the future.

Joining us will be:

Gina Spadafori and Christie Keith of PetConnection.com

Ben Huh of Itchmo.com

Therese Kopiwoda of PetSitUSA.com and ThePetFoodList.com

Kim Duke of PetFoodTracker

The chat will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at 10 PM Eastern Time in the Auditorium. A Special Gift

We wish a wonderful holiday season and Happy New Year to the users of Pethobbyist.com!

Thank you all for being part of our community.

The staff, volunteers, and patrons of the Pethobbyist.com family of web communities have made a donation of $500 to the Wildlife Warriors Fund, which was established in 2002 by Steve and Terri Irwin to support the protection of injured, threatened or endangered wildlife. This donation was made this holiday season in the memory of Steve, in hopes that it may be put towards the conservation of the animals and habitat that Steve helped us appreciate so much over the years.

Steve's memory will forever live on in the hearts and minds of those that he inspired. The world has lost a spokesman for the animals.
Everything They Say About Old Dogs Is True
By Christie Keith
PHChristy

Once upon a time there was a tiny little newborn puppy. She was the only female in her litter, which had been carefully planned and anticipated by her breeders. She wore a little pink ribbon around her neck, because even though her breeders were staunch feminists, they were also total suckers.

Even before her eyes opened she must have known she was special, because she spent almost every waking moment, and probably most of her sleeping ones, cradled in someone’s arms.

By the time she could see and started running around outside, she knew her name was Rosie and that she was “our only girl.” In fact, she thought her name really was “Rosie, our only girl.”

She had a new collar with pink roses embroidered on it. Unless she was playing, her feet never touched the ground. She was her dog mother’s favorite puppy, too. Everything in life was wonderful. The sun came up every day, it was never too hot, the people loved her, the dogs loved her, and really, the whole world was her oyster and that’s just how it was.

And this isn’t a cautionary tale, because while Rosie did have a few rough patches in her long life, basically it continued just the way it began. She finished her show ring championship before she was a year old, racking up quite a few nice wins. She had a little trouble with her first litter, but she was a stellar mom. She never broke a leg or had a serious illness, although there was a rattlesnake that bit her once, and that kind of sucked.

Her dog mom died, a very old deerhound at the age of 12. She was very sad to see her go, but her people seemed to love her even more then, so life kept being good. Sometimes other old dogs would die, and she always felt sad, especially when it was one of her brothers, or her friend Scarlett, the little brown dog. And the worst was when Colleen died, because Colleen was queen of everything, and shouldn’t ever have died, no matter how old she was.

Well, the worst until Rosie’s puppy died, when he was four years old. Rosie was philosophical, though, because by now she’d figured out that sometimes these things happened, one day the dogs would die. First it would be hard, and then life would be good again.

And one day, after a lot of really nice things happened and everyone kept loving her, she was old. Older than any deerhound at her people’s house had ever been. A very, very old deerhound. When she turned 13, people she didn’t know sent her birthday cards and emails, and the deerhound list was all excited about her advanced years, and the people who’d lived with her brothers when they were alive all got teary-eyed and called to wish her a wonderful day.

And Rosie had a little trouble getting up, although once she was up, she could happily go for short walks. She loved her meals and her people and the other dogs, and really, life just couldn’t have been better.

And every night she followed her human mom into the bedroom and curled up on her big comfy bed and fell asleep, only to do it all again, just as happily, the next day.

Old dogs are love.
Fighting Breed Specific Legislation
Most members of the media not only don't help stem the hysteria over dog breeds that leads to breed-specific legislation, they egg it on. In marked contrast is Steve Dale, the country's most popular syndicated pet columnist and radio show host, who has for years been an outspoken opponent of BSL.Steve will be joining us to discuss the fight against BSL, and the danger it represents to dogs and responsible dog ownership. On his blog, Steve wrote, "Ironic - the winner at Westminster is banned from some cities.
My message is 'you can make a difference, you must!' One thing in common in all cities with BSL - apathy." Find out how you can make a difference.

Message From the Alpha Dog

Halloween is a fun time for many of us. Halloween is fun for our kids, trick or treating, fun and scary costumes, parties, good stuff to eat, just alot of fun all around. However, Halloween can be frightening to our family dogs. Those ghouls, goblins and fairy princesses can turn a dog's favorite humans into scary creatures.

Some tips to keep your dog safe during this fun holiday:

If your dog enjoys your evening walk, you may want to walk him/her before trick or treating starts. This way the costumes won't frighten your dog.

Once trick or treating starts, find a safe place to keep your dog inside. If possible, put up a gate or block the front door so your dog can't bolt out. If you can't block your dog from the front door, consider crating or placing him/her in another room. It's not a good idea to keep your dog outside during the evening as many dogs can get aggressive towards odd looking strangers and there is often the chance of teasing/taunting, poisonings and even theft of dogs left outside.

If you like to dress up your dog, make sure the costume is safe. Your dog should be able to breathe, see and hear. Avoid the use of elastic or rubber bands as these can cut of the animal's circulation or causeintestinal obstructions if swallowed.

Keep the candy out of the reach of your dog. Candy wrappers have been know to cause choking or intestinal obstruction. No chocolate is good for a dog. Chocolate contains theobromine, which can cause nerve damage. The darker the chocolate, the higher the possibility of a deadly dose. Some symptoms of chocolate poisoning are excessive drooling, excessive urination, pupil dilation, rapid heartbeat, vomiting and diarrhea, hyperactivity, muscle tremors, seizures, and coma. If you notice any of these symptoms, please take your dog to an emergency vet right away.

After Halloween is over, remember that your dog may be very tired after a busy day. Let him/her rest up and relax.

Everyone have a safe and Happy Halloween!!!

From the return of the Saturday Night Dog Party (now called the Puppy Pajama Party) to the debut of two new chats, we've got something for every dog lover.

Our new chats are "Myth Understood Breeds," about breeds whose reputation precedes them. Topics will include opposing and preventing breed specific legislation, how to change public perception of our dogs, and more. This chat will be on Mondays at 9 PM ET.

Sunday nights at 9 PM ET will be the "Bull Pen," a chat specifically about pit bulls and all the bully breeds. Discuss how training and living with bullies is special, how to help stop BSL, how to work on weight pulls and other bullie activities.

You can view the complete revised weekly schedule, and sign up for free email reminders, in the Dog Chat Center.

Also new on DogHobbyist.com: Our sister site, RescueNetwork.org, has opened up its free adoption classifieds to individual dog owners. We've always allowed shelters and rescue groups to post ads to find homes for dogs at no charge, and now individuals seeking to rehome dogs can do so, too! We also have a free classified section for Lost/Found/Missing Pets.

And it's not new, but there are lots of great new photos of dogs in costumes there this year... where? In the Festive Fido Photo Gallery, of course! Come see the great shots and upload yours!

Not Without My Dogs
By Christie Keith

Marie Knoblock was a regular on the Chow Chow message board back when our dog community got its start on the old AOL Pet Care Forum, and she not only came and visited the new Chow Chow Forum when we moved to DogHobbyist.com, she gave us photos of her dogs to use on the site. Her dog Jimmi's smiling face greets the visitors to the DogHobbyist Chow Chow Forum to this day.

But Jimmi smiles only in photos now, because he, along with Marie and her other dog, drowned in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, when flood waters rapidly filled their home. Her daughter Kim, her daughter's dog, a house guest, and her poodle, escaped through the attic roof, but Marie, 63, and her two chows didn't make it past the second floor.

What would you do, faced with that terrible choice? Like Marie, if told to leave, there's only one thing I would say: Not without my dogs.

In previous disasters, response to this type of thing has usually been disapproval, a sort of “tsk tsk” reaction that these people have only themselves to blame for putting animal lives ahead of human lives, for putting themselves at risk for a mere pet. But it seems there has been a sea change since the last disaster took its toll, because in the face of Hurricane Katrina, pet owners, veterinarians, the media, humane organizations, and aid groups are instead asking if there isn’t a better way.

Lucy Morgan, the Tallahassee Bureau Chief for the St. Petersburg Times in hurricane-plagued Florida, wrote an editorial a few days after Katrina made landfall, asking "Will we remember the lessons of the storm?" and pointing out one major reason that evacuation orders are defied:

"You won't catch us leaving Lewis and Clark, our Siamese gang of two. Mandatory evacuation orders won't ever work until we have enough shelters for Floridians and their dogs, cats and birds. Leaving an animal to face certain death is not an acceptable compromise."

On Sept. 6, NBC-10 News in Providence, RI, reported:

"Valerie Bennett, 34, said rescuers wouldn't let her bring her dogs with her when she and her husband were evacuated from a New Orleans hospital by boat. They were allowed just one item, and that was her husband's medicine. She says she offered her wedding ring and her mother's wedding ring, but they wouldn't relent.

"One little boy cried so much when police took his dog that he threw up.

"Louisiana State Treasurer John Kennedy, who's been rescuing pets, said he found one dog tied up beneath an overpass. Next to it was an unopened can of dog food with a sign that read, 'Please take care of my dog, his name is Chucky'."

VeterinaryPartner.com editor Phyllis DeGioia has dubbed this sea change “The Snowball Effect,” after the little white dog pulled from the arms of a sobbing child as he was evacuated from the Superdome. She is leading an effort to encourage the Red Cross to do as some other disaster assistance groups have done, and set aside a certain percentage of sheltering facilities for people with companion animals, and to make some pet supplies, such as disposable muzzles, part of their standard disaster provisions.

But beyond taking that action, consider this: Marie's story is not unique. There are dozens, maybe hundreds, of people dead today because they wouldn’t leave their pets behind when ordered to evacuate in the face of Hurricane Katrina. Even if you don’t think that pets are important, even if you would walk away from yours to save your own life, or have no pets and don’t understand this issue on a personal level at all, the fact is many people consider animals family members. Like it or not, understand it or not, they would no more leave them to face suffering, abandonment, and starvation than they would leave their own children. It doesn’t really matter that you might disapprove of this, because your disapproval doesn’t change the simple reality, that sometimes people love their animals enough to die for them.

If we prefer not to see that happen, we have to accept that the “tsk tsk” approach has been a failure. Not only are people no more likely to abandon their pets than in previous disasters, they seem to be even less likely to do so. And social perception of this reality appears to be coming around to acceptance, understanding, and even sometimes grudging admiration for those who stayed behind, treading water with a dog or cat clutched in their arms, refusing help if meant leaving their animals behind.

Animal disaster preparedness shouldn't mean pet owners being prepared to die.
